How Relevant Are Breastfeeding Counselors?

The relevance of skilled breastfeeding counselors cannot be over emphasized. During the world breastfeeding week 2020 which started on the 1 to 7 August 2020. The UNICEF executive director Henrietta H.Fore and WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus released a joint statement emphasizing the importance of providing women and families with access to skilled breastfeeding counselors. This is due to the relevant role they play in providing breastfeeding support to families.

While they recognized the benefits of breastfeeding, they also understand the struggles and setbacks encountered by women during breastfeeding. They are of the opinion that mothers need the support of skilled breastfeeding counselors to initiate breastfeeding and to continue breastfeeding successfully.

Breastfeeding counselors are able to support, educate, reassure and provide mothers with the information and confidence required for adequate nourishment of their baby.

Breastfeeding counselors help to boost women’s confidence and empowers them to face the challenges that may arise during breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding counselors help to promote exclusive breastfeeding and to increase the duration of breastfeeding.
